Singapore : Em By The River

Hairy crab might have just kidnapped my blogging mojo.
Should have known better to not blog about something else before I finish on my singapore trip, now I almost couldn’t remember a single thing.

I better act quick before amnesia hits me.

#1 We had Em By The River for breakfast on our last day at Singapore and it is only 3 minutes walk from Studio M.

Em By The River is an alfresco cafe located almost at the end of Robertson Quay and is one of Gallery Hotel’s restaurant. It was great having breakfast by the river with tress around shading us from the sun except that the river was kind of yellowish.

photo 1
#2 As you can tell from the picture.

photo 31
#3 Other than the yellowish river that didn’t bother me much, the entire atmosphere was quite relaxing.

#4 A place you’d like to go on a Sunday for some Eggs Benedict, or so I thought.

#7 No better way to start my day. :)

#8 Fatty’s latte and another fail coffee art that he created.

photo 42
#9 Dennis ordered American Breakfast that comes with coffee/tea and a juice.

photo 52
#10 American breakfast that you could have eaten anywhere and yet taste about the same. This is a no brainer breakfast.

photo 32
#11 I ordered Roast Beef Sandwich, $13 which was decent.

photo 13
#12 Fatty’s Eggs Benedict, $13 is quite the disappointment. Poached eggs were quite badly done, it was too cooked we no longer had runny yolks. Meh.

I wasn’t exactly impressed by the food served but the ambiance gave it a little more credit.
You’ve been warned, Em By The River do not exactly serve the best breakfast but with such relaxing atmosphere you may give it a go once in awhile.
If only they’ll serve better breakfast, it will be perfect.

Singapore: Second, Third & Fourth Stop – Tiong Bahru, Haji Lane and Bugis.

Delicious food, aromatic coffee, unique interior, hipster area, friendly people – I’ll be there.
These are the kind of places whereby I really look forward to whenever I travel with Fatty, instead of the usual tourism spot.

Where: Tiong Bahru Bakery
What: Pastries and Coffee

So I heard that Tiong Bahru Bakery has got the best croissant in Singapore and yours truly here is a very croissant kind of person.
I love eating a good croissant.
I too heard that Tiong Bahru is one of Singapore’s hipster area as there are more and more unique cafes opening up in this rather old area.
I’d say, old is definitely the new black.

#1 Don’t let their name fool you.

#2 I thought it was a grab and go concept and I was shocked when I saw all the seats filled up with people. And so I thought to myself, this must be good.

#3 They sell croissants, danish, tarts, and even hamburgers.

#4 They too have brownies and cakes, you will be spoil by choices.

#5 A guide for you if you do not know how to differentiate coffees.

#6 Spot the tote bag? I WANT! I also like their wooden door that swings both way.

I bought a croissant ($3.20) and a raisin danish ($3.50) for me and fatty to share.
I’d love to try out their coffee too in the future if I ever goes back.
Both the croissant and danish were pretty decent but only if I can eat it while it’s hot, it’ll be even better.
Fatty who loves croissant as much as I do thinks that Tiong Bahru Bakery’s croissant tasted normal kind of good.
Then he started telling me how AWESOME this croissant he had in Hong Kong was whereby he queue for an hour just to buy it.

OKAY! Don’t be so cocky next time I fly to Hong Kong just for croissant!

Where: Open Door Policy (ODP)
What: Modern Bistro

For lunch, we headed to ODP as knows as Open Door Policy which is just few streets away from Tiong Bahru Bakery.

#7 Is this the most creative name or the most random name?

#8

#9 I absolutely love their interior and it was full too when we were there. /Jackpot

#10 These steel ceilings used by ODP reminded me of Acme’s.

#11 We sat by the open kitchen which I do not have a single problem with. I love seeing chefs do their thing.

#12 Latte, $5.50.

#13 Wild mushroom risotto with truffle crumbs, $22. Mushroom risotto was great as it tasted slightly different from the normal ones I ate and the white mushroom you saw on top of that risotto, it is actually raw.

#14 Green gazpacho with scallop ceviche and fresh coriander, $16. I haven’t tasted anything quite like this before, it was a cold soup. Every mouth I took is full with surprise and the scallops aren’t cook which is the way it’s meant to be. It doesn’t taste awful at all, it just tasted different. I cant take in a big amount as my tummy started acting weird but this soup taste nothing like bad.

#15 Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toasted ciabatta with spinach and fresh herbs, $21. Love this dish, portion was big and the amount of smoked salmon they gave was generous. Scrambled eggs were soft and the best part was that the ciabatta wasn’t hard and chewy.

#16 The three of us.

#17 Why cant they just give me a decent look?

Where: Tiong Bahru
What: Cafes and Shops

Walked around Tiong Bahru’s neighbourhood to check out more cafes and shops.

#18 There he go again, appearing in my picture nonchalantly.

#19 Social Haus, a cafe I’d like to try out someday in the future too.

#20 Books Actually that obviously sells books.

#21 Books Actually is not your ordinary book store as the books they sell is a lot more different from all the mainstream books. Just go and have a look if you’re a book lover and happens to be around Tiong Bahru.

#22

Where: Haji Lane
What: Boutiques

Told you my days at Singapore was jam packed, we went from one stop to another.
Haji Lane was next and this is the place Fatty suggested that we go have a look at.

#23

#24 Fatty and mini me at Haji Lane.

#25 Haji Lane is somewhat like our Bangsar Telawi conquered by boutiques but I adore Haji Lane’s building more.
Love the windows on the upper level.

#26 Displays were a lot nice compared to Bangsar’s too, very creative and put together.

#27 Love the plants! Now you get what I meant?

#28

#29 Don’t spoil market lah you.

#30 Must kacau and try on glasses.

#31 And I must take picture of self.

#32 Just a candid of me and Dennis while we rest outside a bar that was closed.

Where: Bugis Street
What: Affordable shopping

Bugis Street is the only shopping place for me at Singapore because everything sold there is so much cheaper compared to malls.
The area was big enough for me to shop and what was on their display rack was a lot more similiar to what I saw at Bangkok or Sungai Wang.
The prices were hiked up quite a lot since I know how incredibly cheap it is to get the stocks from Bangkok which made me reluctant to shop anymore.

My legs were really sore too so we made it a quick one and I managed to buy 2 pair of shorts.
At least I bought something, so mission accomplished.

#33 Fatty bought something too, a pair of sunnies for his rave. But no, not this pair.

#34 This is one of the cutest sunglasses I’ve came across and I hesitated for awhile if I should bring it home. $15, not wise.

Where: Maison Ikkoku
What: Cafe, Boutique and Bar

Last stop for the day before Zouk Out Day 2 was Maison Ikkoku.
There’s three floors altogether and the first floor is a cafe, second is a boutique, while the highest floor rest their bar.

#35 Felt like I walked into an entirely different country, with mosque right in front of me and coconut trees along the way. A very nice place to just sit and relax.

#36 From the name of it, I was hoping to have our dinner there expecting some Japanese or Fusion food but all I got in the menu was all day breakfast.

Cant do breakfast after our meal at ODP so we just sat and have coffee instead since coffee is their main specialty anyway.

#37 My pictures don’t do this place any justice.

#38 Dennis’ tea as he’s not quite a coffee person.

#39 Our Vanilla Latte which I absolutely love.

We wanted to check out Maison Ikkoku’s bar too but it was closed. :(
It’ll be really nice to sit on the top floor overlooking the mosque and people passing by.

Love all the cafes we went, love all the food we ate, and love all the coffee we drank.

Of Dome and BookFest.

5 nights at my beloved city, Bangkok and I am now back at home.
I used up a lot of my time to catch up on my sleep and I kind of fell in love with sleeping all over again.
There’re new adventures, new stories waiting to be unfold every single time I fall asleep.
I’m not too sure about you but I dream every single day and I even dream during short naps.
I love dreaming, it’s like watching movies though there’s a downside to it. There’s no rest, sometimes I need to run for my life in my dreams and I woke up feeling even more tired than ever.

It was a good day yesterday starting with a morning call from boyfriend. (:
Snooze a little before I got up and prepared myself.

Breakfast at KLCC’s Dome was lovely, so chilling and relaxing I find myself really enjoying the moment.
Not to mention the food was good and I was reunited with one of my favourite drink, Chai Latte.
Dome’s Chai Latte could be better, the taste is not as strong as what I had in Melbourne. I prefer it stronger.

Our Chai Latte which is slightly better than Wondermilk’s.

Boyfriend’s Egg Hollandaise.

My Spicy Chicken Mushroom Pasta.

I love having my breakfast at Dome but I hope that their service will be improve.
They’re a little slow on whatever they do, time to buck up.

My job was actually to accompany my fat boyfriend while he waited for his sisters who were at the BookFest organized by Popular.
We then decided to check it out since we both love books in a way.
I love reading books, just that the internet always lure me to do anything that is beneficial to me and myself.

What a good decision we’ve made.
Some of the books are amazingly cheap that you just have to buy it!
There’s an entrance fees which cost only Rm2.50 per person or you can purchase a RM10 ticket in exchange for a everyday pass.
Free admission for students below 18 years old and senior citizens above 60 years old.

Date : 18th – 26th August 2012.
Venue : KLCC (Hall 1 to Hall 5 & Grand Ballroom at Level 3)

I bought a total of 6 books, some hardcovers for only RM90.40 while fat boyfriend bought 4 books for about RM55+.
Unbelievably cheap!!
Fat boyfriend bought a thick hardcover architecture book for only RM15.90!! Dirt cheap!
It is so cheap to the extend where I feel like laughing. Haha!
If you’re like me who aren’t quite willing to spend a fortune on books, this is the time for you to really buy as many books as you wish.

And here’s what I bought :)

I figured it’s time for me to improve myself.

I’ve been dying to read ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus’ for the longest time but as I said I am not willing to spend on books. I assume it’s a great book for us females to understand them males more and vice versa. (I’ll force the fat to read this after I’m done reading it lol.)
As for ‘What The Dog Saw’, I’ve read the first few pages from my phone where I downloaded the trial E-book and it was a very good read. I was so hooked, a very interesting book.

Biography and memoirs! I love non-fiction books! I rarely go for fictions because to me they are all fake.
I am so broke after Bangkok or else I’ll buy more of these books. Mahatma Gandhi, Mao Zedong, Hitler, and so much more!

Also I hadn’t got the chance to buy crime books. :(
I love reading crime books, real crime. Especially those unsolved crimes, serial killers on the loose.

Shopping for books at BookFest can be as fun as shopping for clothes at Bangkok. The prices gave me the same feeling, haha.

You have four more days before BookFest ends, trust me it is gonna be worth it.
They sell all kind of books : Finance, management, business, interior design, branding, graphic designs, cookbooks, craft books, self enrichment books, memoirs, biographies, fictions, comics, …just about everything.
Some books were originally priced at RM150+ and now selling for only RM15.90. Some books go as low as RM8.90!

I am almost half way through ‘Anne Frank’ and I have this urge to go back to BookFest one more time to grab more books.
But I doubt if boyfriend agrees on my thought.

6am at Pasar Karat

Finally taking some time out to blog while I yawn non-stop right this moment.
And I still thought that I’ll earn some free time after Caravan’s first bazaar at Night Markets ended but I was wrong.

Last Friday we were given the chance to join Hello Deer’s Souk Ramadhan which was from 4pm to 12am. Not to mention I went to work that morning and celebrated my friend’s birthday right after. I was knackered.

And now there’s another event coming right up this Friday from 6pm to 1am at Rasta TTDI.
Work in the morning as usual and to top it off I still have to work the next day.
Yawning every 30 seconds is my main activity right now. Not complaining of course but wont life be so good if I can screw my day job and earn five thousands from Caravan every month? LOL!

I have a bad habit whereby I will be extremely lazy when it comes to jobs that I dislike and extremely obsessed when I encounter things/jobs that I love.
Which explains ‘6am at Pasar Karat’.

We were looking for junks, mainly rusted steels and we came across something interesting on the web.
Pasar Karat as known as Thieves Market.
Pasar Karat is located at the back alley of Petaling Street and from what I read it is said that vendors used to sell stolen items.
That of course, is not what interest me.

At this Pasar Karat there’s a variety of junks for you to pick home.
From jeans to an old pair of shoes, from RM30 Nokia to an old radio, from metal spoons to rice cooker, from old bank notes to 2B pencils.
You just have to walk and explore but most of the time and under normal circumstances, we really wouldn’t buy all the things we saw.
Buying them or not you can still go over, explore and have a different experience like we did.
I guess they were open from 6am to 10am, or later. I’m not too sure.

Boyfriend and I woke up before the dawn breaks and despite my tiredness I was still really eager to find out what Pasar Karat is all about.
What hypes up my mood even more is the thought of my breakfast.
The first thing we did upon reaching is to look for Hon Kee Porridge, the famous porridge stall which sells porridge that I really love.
Look for Hong Leong bank if you do not know where Hon Kee Porridge is, it is just right opposite.

Raw fish porridge, my all time favorite!

They’ve been around since 1949 and as far as I remember, they do ran out of porridge pretty early.
If you’re not a morning person, don’t worry because they now have 7 other outlets for you to enjoy their porridge.

But of course, I do think the first Hon Kee in Petaling Street will taste the best.

They even have a new menu and I shall try their new Golden Triple Egg Porridge next time which sounds to good to bypass.

They do sell Chee Cheong Fun too but I advise you to stick to their porridge menu.

Time to explore after our warm hearty breakfast.

Pasar Karat at Petaling Street’s back alley.

We bought a few things for Caravan and I totally enjoyed waking up that early, have a little chat over breakfast and walking around back alleys hand in hand. (:

And the wet market caught my attention too.

Spot the radio? One of the things we bought from Pasar Karat for only RM10 and hey it still works!

Go and have a look yourself if you’re out of activities to do.
I shall blog about Hello Deer next, my life is all about bazaars and Caravan now.
Heh.

Journey for the Soul : Siem Reap Day 4.

My previous Siem Reap day 3 post was to me, a little too heavy which is why I skipped rambling and rambling on what we did that night after exploring beautiful ruins.

We went to Pub Street for the second time, it’s like the only place you’ll feel like going during the night. Or more like the only place you can hangout at night.
The first thing we did upon reaching Pub Street was to look for a decent massage parlor.
We went to this massage parlor called Lemongrass Garden and we paid $10 for a full body massage which lasts for about one hour.
I cant remember much on the massage, I was falling asleep. Towards the end, we both wished we could continue sleeping till the dawn breaks.
After such a long and tiring day, it is definitely worth pampering yourself with a nice massage.

If you’re on a tight budget, you can opt for a $2 foot massage that last for half an hour.
There’re everywhere around Pub Street and for such a low price, I’ll just have to say that it is worth every penny you pay.

For days I told Fatty that I wanted to try their local bbq because I saw them everywhere and they look so tempting. I just had to, so bbq it was after our massage.
There’s a street of local food at Pub Street where you can spot easily. If you’re looking for cheap dinner, that’s the place to go.

Right before we stepped into Pub Street, where people enjoy their beer, music, and companion.

I randomly picked a stall and ordered what we saw on the menu.

Orgasmic ice blended fruit juice! Fatty’s mango banana ice blended juice and my coconut ice blended juice. These are seriously so good and rich, not just some lousy packet fruit drink. Their ice blended fruit juice will deoxidise and soon change colour after it is left for too long.

Fatty’s fried noodle for about a dollar a plate.

And the local bbq I ordered. You can choose up to four different type of meats plus vegetables, noodles, and rice will be included for just $4 a set. The portion is just nice for the two of us.

On the next day which is our 4th day at Siem Reap, we swapped hotel again.
We’re back to the first hotel that mistakenly booked our room wrongly, Golden Banana Boutique Hotel and Resort.
Among all three hotels which we picked, Golden Banana costs the most. We paid RM260 for a night which is indeed quite pricey.

Balconies that overlook the swimming pool.

Love it!

Anyone is welcome to lay down and enjoy their holiday.

But of course I prefer siting on this rattan chair while I let it swing. :)

The view from our balcony.

LOVE! Outdoor bathtub right at our balcony. We poured half the bottle of soap into the bathtub to create bubble bath. ♥

Where our shower is.

Part of our room.

That’s what he do when he cant be bothered about me snapping pictures.

Absolutely love their wardrobe!! Directly attached to the wall’s cement. And damn, I love their rattan hangers too. Was so tempted I almost wanted to take those lovely hangers home.

Not sure where to go after checking out our room, I decided to go to their local market for a walk. Yes, pasar. (:

Tried their local coffee and cup of ice coffee alone can cause the both of us diabetes! It was soooooooo sweet I wonder how much of condensed milk she poured it in.

Crickets, anyone?

Something from Siem Reap that made in fell in love with is their kampot black pepper.
I love the smell and the taste of their black pepper, very much different from those I’ve tasted.

Local spices and snacks. $2 for 3 packs if I’m not mistaken.
Don’t buy from shops or night markets, their definitely more pricey. The cheapest I saw are the ones selling in the market.

Delicious popiah found in the market.

The best food, most often than not can be found in the most unexpected place.
Nothing interesting, I know. Looks somewhat dirty even.

But this bowl of noodle completed my day. Every now and then I miss eating this bowl of noodle!! Fatty said it’s ‘la zah min’ as known as dirty noodles. Please someone enlighten me, do we have it here in Malaysia?

The friendly kids who were so eager to look at the photo after I captured it. :)

After our lunch, we went back to the thought provoking cafe called Art Deli to have a drink.

Have I mentioned that beers in Cambodia is amazingly cheap? Only $0.50 for glass of draft Angkor beer and $1.50 for a bottle of Asahi.
Now I really wish I can drink.

One of my favourite picture from Siem Reap!

I heart this cafe! How can you not love a place like this, right?

Such a creative idea.

Keep calm and carry one.

I enjoyed my short time in the cafe. Enjoyed looking at all the arts around and listen to one of my favourite music, Soledad.
Time constraint wont let me stay for long so I leave this little cafe knowing that one day, I’ll be back definitely.
We wanted to spend more time in the hotel since we paid quite a sum for it so we went back for a swim.

Sorry, I’m a girl. A vain one sometimes. :P

Time for my much awaited dinner after our swim.
Among all the restaurants that I’ve researched on, Wat Damnak Cuisine is the only restaurant that I told myself I cannot miss.

‘Cuisine Wat Damnak was founded on the simple concept of using only local fresh seasonal produce with which to create exquisite Cambodian food.’
Cuisine Wat Damnak is considered as a fine dining restaurant and they only have two set menus for you to choose from. However, their set menus are change every week depending on what’s available in the market as the chef will only pick the freshest and the best ingredients.

Don’t get me wrong, I was so eager to try Cuisine Wat Damnak is not for the reason that I want to dine in fancy restaurants. I was attracted by their concept, how their menus will change every week and how dedicated this french chef is. ‘French chef’, I cant say no.

There’s two tasting menu, one price at $17 and another price at $24.

Dimly lit ambience.

A very asian yet taste too good to be true amuse bouche.

The quality of the pictures I took are bad due to the dim light so I’ll forego posting it up.

Four course meal with a dessert for only about Rm75, that’s like a frigging good deal.
If you ever go to Siem Reap, please try this restaurant. This will not disappoint you, I swear. :)

Some fruit we’ve not tasted before.

And that’s how we end our last night in Siem Reap, with a very good meal.
That night, I was heavy hearted. I do not want to leave this inspiring place just yet.
Right there and then I wish I can have another week but I tell myself I shouldn’t be greedy.

Golden Banana’s cafe, where we had our breakfast.

Love those lights. I think I love almost everything I see in Siem Reap la.

Damn special right the clock!! I was staring at it for so long.

Fatty’s English breakfast before we leave the hotel. He’s always very eager to eat his meal, he cant even wait for 5 seconds for me to capture a picture. Pfft.

And my super hearty-warmy-yummy local porridge.

We were running late and I was so afraid that we might not make it to the airport on time.
But then again I realised, no such thing.

Goodbye Siem Reap for now.

I will definitely be back and the next time when I’m there, there’s one thing I will and must do.
Go for a cooking class because they do offer such classes there.

Next time.
Till then Siem Reap.

Birdman Eating and The Hardware Société

I was expecting a blog post from myself last week but little did I know my ‘timetable’ was be jam packed.
Tuesday and Wednesday was spent watching ‘Bottled Passion’, a TVB drama.
The habit of watching drama all day, from episode to episode is no longer in me.
Or I should say, not much drama interest me nowadays.

Saw my mom and brother watching ‘Bottled Passion’ and it looks so interesting I have to get it from my brother.
It was real good I finished it in 3 days, mainly because it’s a love story with a twist.
But I hate the ending so it kind of made me feel like I wasted my time watching it.
TVB should know by now that ‘unhappy ending’ will not make us, the audience happy.

After the drama, the rest of my days were spent outside of home hanging out with friends from Melbourne cause most of them are at KL for now. (:
Speaking of Melbourne, here is the post as promised.

Food from Melbourne’s cafe.
You see, it’s been pretty long (very damn long in fact) since I came home from Melbourne so I guess I probably cant describe how the food taste like anymore except that it tasted good wtf.
But I’ll try my best to dig out whatever I can remember from my brain.

First off, Birdman Eating.
Yes, what a name I thought to myself when Fatty first told me about it.
Birdman Eating : Odd name, simple, and brilliantly done (food and ambiance).

I do not do any research about restaurant or cafes during my stay in Melbourne (unlike here in KL) because obviously, it’s the boyf’s job while I visit him.
Apparently Birdman Eating is very famous for their baked eggs as I’ve mentioned in my previous post.

* The first thing that caught my eye when I stepped into Birdman Eating is their hanging carrots in plastic bags. What a decoration. The first one is a bird man like figure with colourful feathers, second is the hanging plastic-bag-carrots and the third are flowers in vases which they changed it on the spot when we’re there.
Very creatively done.

* One of the best Chai Latte I’ve ever tried in Melbourne which came in a rather unique red tin. Very aromatic and I really like it that way. Damn, I seriously miss drinking Chai Latte. $5.50.

* I guess we ordered baked eggs of the day which you can made your decision based on what they have on their blackboard. Just imagine, on a chilly early noon you’re served with pipping hot baked eggs with runny yolks on a metal skillet and with a sliced of buttered toast. Your day will be a wonderful one after eating the baked eggs, hah. $14.

* Soup of the day which I cant remember much.

* A picture while we were walking towards the tram station. I will definitely be back for more baked eggs, some time this year. (:

So if you happened to be in Melbourne, do drop by on a Sunday morning for some perfectly bake baked eggs.
This will not disappoint you, I swear.
It’s located at Fitzroy and here’s the address.

Birdman Eating
238 Gertrude Street
Fitzroy, VIC 3065

Mon-Fri 7am–10:30pm
Sat-Sun 8am–10:30pm

Next on is The Hardware Société.
Did not bother much on why Birdman Eating is called Birdman Eating but how did The Hardware Société’s name came by is from the lane itself, located at Hardware street.
So next time if you cant figure what name to give your cafe, you can try ‘Hang Tuah Société’ if your cafe is at Jalan Hang Tuah.
Damn, Malaysia’s street name never sound right.

* Another perfect place for a warm hearty breakfast. I seriously love eating breakfast in Melbourne.

* If you pay attention enough, most of the newly opened cafes in KL look like the above picture. Probably inspired by cafes from the west.
The Hardware Société’s interior actually looked much better than the picture above. I was too busy catching up with my friend and too busy focusing on food. Cant be bothered with pictures that very moment. But do google for it if you’re interested and you’ll be amaze.

Expect to see a line of people waiting for tables when you’re there, probably a very normal scene for The Hardware Société.

Do forgive me because I am not able to name a single dish here, my brain failed me.
So this time round, I’ll just say I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

* Chai Latte in a pot wrapped by a cute and colourful knit. Told you I love Chai Latte, just simply irresistible.

* My friends were not quite used to the taste and the combination of ingredients the cafe offered.

* Just take a look at the peas/beans!

* This is the best dish but I cant remember what it is.

* I was really happy when I get to meet Foon in Melbourne and that’s where we enjoyed our breakfast together.

The Hardware Société is located in CBD, in the heart of Melbourne city.

The Hardware Société
120 Hardware Street
Melbourne VIC 3000

Opening hours:
Mon – Fri 7.30am – 3pm
Sat – 8.30am – 2pm

Now you see the difference between Malaysia’s cafe and Melbourne’s?
Or you still don’t?
Sometimes it just feels like these Melburnians put so much heart and effort in their food and drinks.
Damn, Melburnians can really cook!
Worth every penny you pay!
