Food

Of Dome and BookFest.

5 nights at my beloved city, Bangkok and I am now back at home.
I used up a lot of my time to catch up on my sleep and I kind of fell in love with sleeping all over again.
There’re new adventures, new stories waiting to be unfold every single time I fall asleep.
I’m not too sure about you but I dream every single day and I even dream during short naps.
I love dreaming, it’s like watching movies though there’s a downside to it. There’s no rest, sometimes I need to run for my life in my dreams and I woke up feeling even more tired than ever.

It was a good day yesterday starting with a morning call from boyfriend. (:
Snooze a little before I got up and prepared myself.

Breakfast at KLCC’s Dome was lovely, so chilling and relaxing I find myself really enjoying the moment.
Not to mention the food was good and I was reunited with one of my favourite drink, Chai Latte.
Dome’s Chai Latte could be better, the taste is not as strong as what I had in Melbourne. I prefer it stronger.

Our Chai Latte which is slightly better than Wondermilk’s.

Boyfriend’s Egg Hollandaise.

My Spicy Chicken Mushroom Pasta.

I love having my breakfast at Dome but I hope that their service will be improve.
They’re a little slow on whatever they do, time to buck up.

My job was actually to accompany my fat boyfriend while he waited for his sisters who were at the BookFest organized by Popular.
We then decided to check it out since we both love books in a way.
I love reading books, just that the internet always lure me to do anything that is beneficial to me and myself.

What a good decision we’ve made.
Some of the books are amazingly cheap that you just have to buy it!
There’s an entrance fees which cost only Rm2.50 per person or you can purchase a RM10 ticket in exchange for a everyday pass.
Free admission for students below 18 years old and senior citizens above 60 years old.

Date : 18th – 26th August 2012.
Venue : KLCC (Hall 1 to Hall 5 & Grand Ballroom at Level 3)

I bought a total of 6 books, some hardcovers for only RM90.40 while fat boyfriend bought 4 books for about RM55+.
Unbelievably cheap!!
Fat boyfriend bought a thick hardcover architecture book for only RM15.90!! Dirt cheap!
It is so cheap to the extend where I feel like laughing. Haha!
If you’re like me who aren’t quite willing to spend a fortune on books, this is the time for you to really buy as many books as you wish.

And here’s what I bought :)

I figured it’s time for me to improve myself.

I’ve been dying to read ‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus’ for the longest time but as I said I am not willing to spend on books. I assume it’s a great book for us females to understand them males more and vice versa. (I’ll force the fat to read this after I’m done reading it lol.)
As for ‘What The Dog Saw’, I’ve read the first few pages from my phone where I downloaded the trial E-book and it was a very good read. I was so hooked, a very interesting book.

Biography and memoirs! I love non-fiction books! I rarely go for fictions because to me they are all fake.
I am so broke after Bangkok or else I’ll buy more of these books. Mahatma Gandhi, Mao Zedong, Hitler, and so much more!

Also I hadn’t got the chance to buy crime books. :(
I love reading crime books, real crime. Especially those unsolved crimes, serial killers on the loose.

Shopping for books at BookFest can be as fun as shopping for clothes at Bangkok. The prices gave me the same feeling, haha.

You have four more days before BookFest ends, trust me it is gonna be worth it.
They sell all kind of books : Finance, management, business, interior design, branding, graphic designs, cookbooks, craft books, self enrichment books, memoirs, biographies, fictions, comics, …just about everything.
Some books were originally priced at RM150+ and now selling for only RM15.90. Some books go as low as RM8.90!

I am almost half way through ‘Anne Frank’ and I have this urge to go back to BookFest one more time to grab more books.
But I doubt if boyfriend agrees on my thought.

6am at Pasar Karat

Finally taking some time out to blog while I yawn non-stop right this moment.
And I still thought that I’ll earn some free time after Caravan’s first bazaar at Night Markets ended but I was wrong.

Last Friday we were given the chance to join Hello Deer’s Souk Ramadhan which was from 4pm to 12am. Not to mention I went to work that morning and celebrated my friend’s birthday right after. I was knackered.

And now there’s another event coming right up this Friday from 6pm to 1am at Rasta TTDI.
Work in the morning as usual and to top it off I still have to work the next day.
Yawning every 30 seconds is my main activity right now. Not complaining of course but wont life be so good if I can screw my day job and earn five thousands from Caravan every month? LOL!

I have a bad habit whereby I will be extremely lazy when it comes to jobs that I dislike and extremely obsessed when I encounter things/jobs that I love.
Which explains ‘6am at Pasar Karat’.

We were looking for junks, mainly rusted steels and we came across something interesting on the web.
Pasar Karat as known as Thieves Market.
Pasar Karat is located at the back alley of Petaling Street and from what I read it is said that vendors used to sell stolen items.
That of course, is not what interest me.

At this Pasar Karat there’s a variety of junks for you to pick home.
From jeans to an old pair of shoes, from RM30 Nokia to an old radio, from metal spoons to rice cooker, from old bank notes to 2B pencils.
You just have to walk and explore but most of the time and under normal circumstances, we really wouldn’t buy all the things we saw.
Buying them or not you can still go over, explore and have a different experience like we did.
I guess they were open from 6am to 10am, or later. I’m not too sure.

Boyfriend and I woke up before the dawn breaks and despite my tiredness I was still really eager to find out what Pasar Karat is all about.
What hypes up my mood even more is the thought of my breakfast.
The first thing we did upon reaching is to look for Hon Kee Porridge, the famous porridge stall which sells porridge that I really love.
Look for Hong Leong bank if you do not know where Hon Kee Porridge is, it is just right opposite.

Raw fish porridge, my all time favorite!

They’ve been around since 1949 and as far as I remember, they do ran out of porridge pretty early.
If you’re not a morning person, don’t worry because they now have 7 other outlets for you to enjoy their porridge.

But of course, I do think the first Hon Kee in Petaling Street will taste the best.

They even have a new menu and I shall try their new Golden Triple Egg Porridge next time which sounds to good to bypass.

They do sell Chee Cheong Fun too but I advise you to stick to their porridge menu.

Time to explore after our warm hearty breakfast.

Pasar Karat at Petaling Street’s back alley.

We bought a few things for Caravan and I totally enjoyed waking up that early, have a little chat over breakfast and walking around back alleys hand in hand. (:

And the wet market caught my attention too.

Spot the radio? One of the things we bought from Pasar Karat for only RM10 and hey it still works!

Go and have a look yourself if you’re out of activities to do.
I shall blog about Hello Deer next, my life is all about bazaars and Caravan now.
Heh.

Fatty’s 23rd Birthday Dinner :)

It was Fatty’s birthday last week and I’ve been anticipating for this day to come.
I was feeling all excited. So excited that Fatty asked me why do I look so happy when it’s his birthday and not mine.

This shows how much I love him. LOLOL!
Jokes aside.

All the while it was Fatty who chooses which restaurant we should go to when it comes to occasions like this.
This time round, I decided to be the decision maker.
I did not disclose where I will be bringing him, keeping it secretive and all.

I asked him to drive us to Dua Residency and for a moment he thought that I was bringing him to Delicious for his birthday dinner.
I guess he was about to cry in his heart, hahaha.

Knowing him so well, of course I wouldn’t pick a place like Delicious.

Not Delicious, but Dish which is under the same group.

DISH – Delicious Ingredients Steak House at Dua Residency.
‘A most unorthodox fine dining establishment that is luxe in spirit but casual in practice. Foodies know that dressing up is not a prerequisite for dining well and at DISH diners can relax as they dig into their perfectly prepared prime cuts of beef.’

Plenty of wine to choose from for wine lovers.

My birthday boy. :)

And the ‘secretive’ girlfriend.

Complimentary Eggplant Fritters with studded black sesame. No, not banana fritters but some real warm and crunchy eggplant fritters.

Complimentary bread with rosemary herb butter. It’s a little hard to resist the bread especially when it is served with rosemary herb butter but try to anyhow. You need to make space for better food that is coming your way.

I decided on what to order since I was the decision maker for the night.
I ordered a set of ‘A Taste of Dish’ (Rm135) for us to share. In addition to that I add on pumpkin soup and salt baked cod fish.

Amuse Bouche, watermelon with feta cheese, pine nuts and balsamic vinegar.
I didn’t know such combination could go so well together. Watermelon, feta cheese and balsamic vinegar could easily be the perfect combination. The first bite was sweet and juicy, then comes the second bite which is so flavorful thanks to the feta cheese.
When the balsamic vinegar seeps in for the third bite, it creates a heavenly taste. I am so amaze by this!

Pumpkin soup with mushroom, parmesan and truffle – Rm22.
This soup is so worth the price. Not to mention that this pumpkin soup is thick and rich, there’s even mushroom, parmesan, and truffle to go with it.
Definitely warms my tummy and my soul. I adore pumpkin soup and this is one of the best I’ve tried so far.

Foie Gras and smoked duck ballotine with spiced pineapple.
The more common way of preparing foie gras would be pan seared in most of the restaurants here in KL and that day was my first time tasting a non-pan-seared-foie-gras. Very rich in flavour and when spread it on the toasted bread that came along with it turns out to be a great pair.

I myself wasn’t feeling too well on that day so I gave my share to Fatty.
The taste was too strong for my weak body. :(

Seared and marinated tuna with pickled radish and crispy quail eggs.
Oh I love this dish!  Quail egg was really crispy on the outside and on the inside it has runny yolks.
Tuna was real good too, I wish they had given us more. Sweet, juicy, and tasty!

.

Sauteed scallop with cauliflower puree, turkey bacon and almonds.
I dislike eating cauliflower but cauliflower puree is a different story all together. I definitely love their cauliflower puree. As for the scallops, it was good but somehow it did not take me by surprise.

Wagyu striploin with truffled potato puree and tarragon poached vegetables.
This dish is easily one of my favourite too. I was already so full when this dish was served but at the same time I feel like I cant stop eating. So tender, juicy, and well cooked.
Raw enough for my liking, absolutely digging this dish. Just look at that red piece of meat!

Salt baked cod with red pepper and lemon sauce – Rm69.
It was served on a wooden block, wrapped by a layer of salted pastries.

Cooked for 40 minutes, this piece of cod fish is absolutely worth the wait.
The cod fish is fresh and sweet, it taste good even on its own.
It was placed on a plate of roasted vegetables and red pepper puree with a tinge of sourness.
I would prefer cauliflower puree.  I don’t quite like pairing such fresh fish with a rather sour puree.
Then again, the fish itself could make up for that.

Petit four.

Caramel chocolate delice with raspberries and lime ice-cream.
A great combination of very rich chocolate balanced out by sweet and sour lime ice-cream.
And of course the raspberries. Fatty kept pestering me to try the raspberries, telling me that they’re real sweet. Good lord, you can imagine my expression when I took the first bite. It was sour as hell.

What attracted me to pick Dish in the first place was Chef Steve Allen.
He worked for more than 10 years in Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen.
This fact alone is enough.  And there, the one standing is him.

♥

Outfit of the day accompanied by a very full tummy.

The bill came up to about Rm325++, with a glass of red wine (Rm35)  and a bottle of con-people-mineral-water (Rm18).
Fatty felt that the cod fish is a little expensive which I do agree on.
However, ‘A Taste of Dish’ is definitely worth the price. All the dishes above are included except for pumpkin soup and cod fish.

We did not head for another round after the dinner.
Both of us are dead tired by then, all we wanted to do was to go back home and rest.
He knew there was another surprise waiting for him but what I did was sleeping on his bed while he watched his very-nice-Fringe-drama.
I wanted to surprise him when the clock strikes 12 but unfortunately his dad was watching TV in the living room so I figured I better wait for his dad to go to bed first.
Ended up I am the one falling asleep on Fatty’s bed but I woke up every 20 minutes or so asking, ‘Your dad still watching TV ah?’.

Falling asleep then waking up. Falling asleep then waking up.
Torturous much.

So here it is, the surprise. He thought I bought him a cake. No I didn’t.
I just prepared a no-bake-cake. A watermelon cake! He laughed when he saw this. Hah!
Isn’t it cute? And we both were thirsty so we gobbled down the watermelon balls.

I got the idea from Martha Stewart. She’s the queen of housewives, really.

Ingredients

1 seedless watermelon (about 14 pounds)
Directions

Cut top and bottom thirds off 1 seedless watermelon (about 14 pounds); reserve. Cut middle third of watermelon into wedges. Scoop flesh from ends into balls using a melon baller. Arrange balls on top of wedges.

I bought half a watermelon but I wish the one I bought was bigger so that I can scooped more watermelon balls.
Also, do buy mint leaves and put it in the middle. It sure does look better.
Or you can even chopped mint leaves into fine mint leaves and sprinkle on top of those watermelon balls. Sure does look better. :)

Try this if you want to bake a cake but do not have an oven at home, just like me.
Simple, sweet, cute, refreshing and healthy. Why not? Heh.

I hope Fatty had a great night that day and I hope he will like my simple watermelon cake.
That’s not all for his birthday.

Nathalie’s Gourmet : Second Visit

I am afraid that I might be losing my blogging mojo slowly.
I’ve been somewhat busy lately, juggling my time around work, play, eat and sleep.
My nine-to-six-job, my friends, my boyfriend, my family, my personal time at home, my play time, and not to mention been working rather hard for side income.
There’s actually more to that!
And the busy period has just begun, there’s more of it to come.

Oh wait, and also updating this blog.

This was about two to three weeks ago.
Boyfriend and I decided to have our dinner at Publika, S.wine.
Which I’ve been wanting to go for some while now.

I guess luck was with us this time round because S.wine was full that night.
We head over to Nathalie’s Gourmet which is obviously a much better choice.
Not only because Nathalie’s Gourmet serves good quality food but it is also due to the reason that S.wine is a tad bit of a disappointment.

More on that later.

Ben Tay and his canggih hair.Such a metrosexual guy.

Complimentary bread that comes with a very good unsalted butter to go along with it. Sprinkled some salt onto the butter for a well balance saltiness.

King Prawn Soup, Prawns in Quenelle with Fresh Herbs, Thai Basil Emulsion – Rm28
The heavy small of prawn fills the air once this dish was served. The smell did opened up my appetite, I was so eager to try my first spoon.

Every corner of my mouth is filled up with the taste of king prawn. One spoon after another, I just couldn’t stop savoring it.

Warm Monk Fish Brandade Crispy Violet Potatoes, Greens, Quail Egg, Salmon Roe and Chive Dressing – Rm26
I cant tell much about this dish as I’m already quite full after drinking that bowl of awesome soup.

Pan-Fried Veal Tenderloin, Mushroom Raviole, Agar of Vegetables, Short Veal Juice – Rm61
Very weird agar-agar that has vegetables in it and it tasted salty. We both don’t really like it but it does look nice.
Tenderloin of course was very tender.

I should really stop delaying my food post for too long, I sometimes cant remember how the food I ate tasted like anymore.

Okay back to S.wine at Publika, that was one of my worst meal.
The food served was bland. I was expecting so much more!
Most importantly, my dish for that day was filled with beans and nuts and sesames!!! I cant even taste my pork!!!

Beans and nuts and sesames!? You kidding me!?
Fatty said, ‘I think the amount of beans and nuts you ate today is more than the amount of beans and nuts you ate in your entire life’.
Which I think what he said is true.

I bloody hate beans and nuts!
You can torture me with those.

Acme Bar & Coffee : Second Visit

Acme : First Visit

Remember that week where I was supposed to go for Matta fair to check out some cheap deals?
And it was so incredibly jam that Fatty decided to just gave that up.

To compensate, we headed to Acme Bar & Coffee to avoid crowds and what a good decision we made because it was pretty quiet on that day. :)

Activities in the car are very limited as you can tell.

Acme Bar & Coffee make us happy. Quiet place, wonderful interior, and good food once again. :)

This time we picked a different seat so that I can capture Acme Bar in a different dimension. Love the geometrical pattern of the ceiling!

A selection of Acme’s cake from Pina Colada cake to apple and olive oil cake. They do have some pretty interesting cakes, something for a change.

Moroccan Mint Tea – Rm15.

That was like one of the cutest tea bag I ever seen with a tiny green leave sticking out and the Moroccan Mint tea is perfect for a Sunday noon, refreshing you from your tedious week.

Cempedak cake with pistachio – Rm15. A combination of pandan sponge cake, cempedak cream, and pistachio nuts. The taste of cempedak cream was really strong and when mix it with pistachio nuts it created something else. And finally balanced it out with plain pandan sponge cake, it became something quite interesting.

Salted egg yolk fried chicken strips – Rm25. I ordered this because I simply just cant resist salted egg yolk. This is okay but still it cant beat salted egg yolk fried from chinese restaurant.

Baked eggs, Spinach, Rhubarb, Ricotta, and Grilled Sourdough bread – Rm17. Fatty love this dish and he enjoyed eating it so much.
Runny egg yolks with spinach and ricotta cheese, you probably cant go wrong with that.
But Birdman’s baked eggs still top the list.

Fatty took a toilet break in between and came back telling me that the toilet is worth checking out.

Indeed. I am so in love with Acme’s vintage toilet! For a moment I felt like I time traveled back to at least a hundred years ago.
One of the interior I like most is interior from English olden days.

And they even provided a mirror inside their toilet cubicles for privacy purpose. I dislike checking myself out through mirrors in public toilets when people is around.
Acme is pretty thoughtful to provide a mirror in toilet cubicles.

I enjoyed my tea time at Acme.
Though I must say that not all their food satisfy my taste bud but given with the interior like such that created a nice ambiance, Acme will be one of the place that I’d like to visit often.

Ending my post with #OOTD :)

Poached Eggs in Tomato Sauce and Garlic Chicken with White Wine Sauce.

Just a quick post to share the recipes which I’ve mentioned earlier on.

Poached Eggs in Tomato Sauce from Martha Stewart.

Poached eggs in tomato sauce.

Poached eggs in tomato sauce.

Ingredients.

  • 1 can (28 ounces) whole plum tomatoes – I bought one can diced tomatoes.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes – Skipped this.
  • Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 4 large eggs
  • 4 slices toasted country bread, for serving
  • Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, for serving – And this too because Fatty is on diet.

 Directions directly from Martha Stewart’swebsite.

1. Transfer tomatoes and their juices to the jar of a blender. Blend until tomatoes are coarsely chopped; set aside.
( I skipped this first step because I do not have a blender at home and I don’t mind eating chunkier tomatoes, so it’s entirely up to you on how you wanna cook your meal.)

2. In a small skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add garlic and crushed red pepper; cook, stirring, until lightly browned, about 1 minute. Add tomato sauce and bring to a boil; season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes.

3. Gently crack eggs into tomato mixture, cover, and let cook 5 minutes. Remove skillet from heat, uncover, and let stand 2 to 3 minutes.

4. Transfer each egg to a piece of toast. Spoon over sauce, garnish with cheese, and season with salt and pepper; serve immediately.

I cant seem to turn my eggs into poached eggs, as usual and I dislike this fact!
So I didn’t really take the effort to even poach it this time, I just want my lunch that’s all. Hah.

A very very simple dish that’s healthy, fuss free, and not to mention that it tasted good.
Try this if you’re planning to impress someone or if you’re mad hungry. You’ll prolly get the same satisfaction. :)

Garlic Chicken with White Wine Sauce.

Garlic chicken with white wine sauce.

Garlic chicken with white wine sauce.

Ingredients.

  • 1 4-pound whole chicken, cut into eight parts
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2-3 whole heads of garlic, cloves separated (40 cloves) but not peeled
  • Olive oil
  • 1 1/4 cup dry white wine, such as a Sauvignon Blanc
  • 3 large sprigs of fresh tarragon
  • 3 large sprigs of fresh thyme

Directions from Simply Recipes.

1. Lightly smash the garlic cloves with the side of a heavy chef’s knife, just enough to break the cloves. Leave peel on.

2. Trim the chicken pieces of excess fat. Pat them dry and sprinkle pieces generously with salt and pepper. Heat 3 Tbsp olive oil in a Dutch oven (or a large thick-bottom pan with a tight fitting cover) on medium high. Working in batches, brown the chicken pieces on all sides. Lay the chicken pieces on the hot oil, do not move until browned, then turn over to other side using tongs. Remove from pan when browned.

3. Add a little more olive oil to the pan if necessary. Add the garlic and sauté until golden brown, about 4 minutes. Add the wine and the herbs. Bring to a boil. Add the chicken pieces. Reduce the heat to medium low. Cover the pan and simmer until the chicken is cooked through. Move the chicken pieces from top to bottom every 5 minutes for about 20 minutes. Chicken is done when a meat thermometer inserted into thickest part reads 180°F for thighs and 170°F for breasts.

Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer chicken pieces to a platter; spoon garlic sauce over the chicken.

I tried this dish once in Melbourne and it somehow tasted different when I cooked this dish again that day.
It tasted better in Melbourne. :(

What was different in both the garlic chicken is that the first time I used dried mixed herbs and the second time I used fresh herbs that I bought from supermarket here.
And also I used different wine and it tasted a little too sweet this time.

Next time, I’m gonna stick to normal white wine.
If you love garlic, you’re gonna like this dish.

Do enjoy the cooking if you’re trying these dishes out and enjoy your Friday too. :)
